Individual & Family Information
When you enroll in a health insurance plan, whether through an employer-sponsored plan, a private plan, a plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace, or a Medicare plan, you may be asked whether you need individual or family health coverage.
Individual health plans are designed to provide coverage to you, while family plans are designed to provide coverage to you and all eligible dependents, typically family members or legal dependents. Certain plans, such as Medicare plans, only allow you to enroll in individual plans. However, if you have a private, employer-sponsored or Marketplace plan and have a spouse or dependents, you may be able to choose to enroll in a family plan to help them gain coverage.

What Is Individual Health Insurance?
Individual health insurance refers to health plans you shop for, purchase and maintain on your own. These policies can cover individuals and families, and provide alternatives for coverage aside from employer-sponsored plans or government-operated programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid.
Having adequate individual health insurance allows you to access various essential services, including preventive care (e.g., regular checkups and vaccinations), doctors, specialists and hospitals.
What Is Family Health Insurance?
Family health insurance is similar to individual health insurance. The main difference is that multiple people are listed on your policy, and your premiums are generally higher because you’re insuring multiple people.
How Does It Work When Insurance Has Individual and Family Deductibles?
With a family deductible, each individual listed on your policy will have an individual deductible and out-of-pocket maximum set, but your overall policy will have a family deductible and out-of-pocket maximum as well. As individuals incur medical expenses throughout the plan year, eligible out-of-pocket expenses go toward their deductible and family deductible. The same can be said for the individual and family out-of-pocket maximum limits.
If an individual meets their individual deductible, that individual may no longer owe out-of-pocket expenses for their eligible medical expenses for the plan year. But, if the family deductible is met, other covered individuals under the plan who still need to meet their individual deductibles are still responsible for costs. Once your family deductible is met for the plan year, it no longer matters whether each individual’s deductible is met as the family deductible is set to be the highest deductible to meet for the plan year. The same can be said for out-of-pocket maximums under your plan.
Is a Family Insurance Plan Cheaper Than an Individual Plan?
Having a family insurance plan for you and your dependents may be more cost-effective than buying each individual their own insurance plan. However, family insurance plans tend to cost more in premiums than individual plans because more people are covered under your plan.
